Well, it is that time of the year again, when friends and family sit down to their Thanksgiving meals across the country, and for some Americans living abroad, around the world. It is also the day when many health clubs remain open in the morning to serve their members on Thanksgiving day, and turkey-trot runs are organized to make sure people get their exercise in before the feast to come.
Most of us even watch a little pigskin action as well. For those who might not understand, the reference is to football. You can check the three NFL games scheduled here.
You might recall the history of the holiday. In September 1620, a small ship called the Mayflower left Plymouth, England, carrying 102 passengers; only half of the original passengers and crew survived to see the first New England spring following their 66-day voyage to the new world. In 1621, 398 years ago, the Plymouth colonists and Wampanoag Indians shared an autumn feast that is acknowledged today as one of the first Thanksgiving celebrations. With help from native Americans, the colonists learned how to farm, hunt, and survive following their desperate winter; the result was a great feast of thanks in the fall.
For more than two centuries, Thanksgiving was celebrated by individual colonies and states. It wasn’t until 1863, in the middle of the Civil War, that President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed a national Thanksgiving Day be held each November. The tradition has continued since then for nearly four centuries now.
With the holiday’s roots based on being thankful for what you are fortunate enough to have, I reflect on my thanks for my family’s health, that we have a roof over our heads, food to eat, and the chance to be together. What I am also thankful for is our dedicated team at ABC Financial, with new faces like our CEO Bill Davis, and of course colleagues, I have worked so closely with for many years. Together, the team at ABC Financial is thankful for having the chance to serve so many of you in the health club industry.
Our team at ABC Financial has lent support to many charitable organizations over the years because being thankful also means helping those less fortunate. The horrible floods in Arkansas this year were devastating to Arkansas communities, and so we did our best to be of help. During the holidays we make a point to support our communities even more as many of the professionals in the health club business so kindly do.
So thank you for taking the time to read this post and here is to your having a wonderful and thankful Thanksgiving. At ABC Financial Services we are so thankful for all of you and to be able to work in an industry that does so much good for so many people. What are you thankful for?
